The Level 2 Certificate will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in the school environment and is suitable for anyone working in a role that supports pupils' learning, including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants.
Working within a school is a hugely challenging but very rewarding occupation. To support teaching staff is a major responsibility, which is why you'll need this recognised training to become a good teaching assistant.
It will take 12 months to complete the Level 2 course on a part-time basis. You'll need to be employed in a school or have a regular work placement in a primary or secondary school setting to take the course. You'll attend monthly study groups at a local training centre and will be given assignments to complete and have observations in your workplace. Alternatively we can offer bespoke training for groups of 10 or more learners at the same school - contact us to find out more about this option.
If you receive Government funding for the course - check our funding finder to see if you're eligible - you'll also study functional skills in English, maths and ICT along with Employment Rights & Responsibilities and Personal Learning & Thinking Skills.
An Apprentice needs to be in training for at least a year and a day, which equates to 1,560 hours – or 30 hours a week – of employment. It is expected that 20% of these hours are spent completing off the job training.
Seven subject areas are covered including:
- Helping keep children safe
- Supporting literacy and numeracy activities
- Promoting positive relationships
Work & assessment
You'll find all the resources for your course on our Online Training Academy where you'll also be able to submit your work and study for your functional skills. Assessment is by workplace observations, practical tasks at work, answering questions and assignment writing.
No previous vocational qualifications are necessary for this course but Apprenticeship learners need to be working at Entry 3 level for the Functional Skill of English.
After completing Level 2 you will be in a great position to progress on to the Level 3 Diploma for Teaching Assistants.
